#ThrowbackThursday to 1918, when, on this day in a #ThrowbackThursday to 1918, when, on this day in aviation history, 1st Lieutenant Paul Frank Baer became the first official American "ace" flying in the American service by adding a fifth aerial combat victory, against an enemy Albatross C. He may share credit for that specific one, considering Lt. C. H. Wilcox played a large role in the victory as well, but by the end of May 1918, when he himself was shot down and captured as a POW (later released and returned home from the war safely), Baer could take official credit for taking out 9 enemy planes, claiming even more unofficially as well.

While he was the first ace in American service (and the first to shoot down any plane), he was not the first American ace. Another American was serving in the French Air Service when he reached 5 victories as well, a couple years before Baer. Can you tell us who that pilot was?

We take you through our boneyard to showcase the F We take you through our boneyard to showcase the F-8 Crusader, a Marine Corps aircraft with a unique variable-incidence wing that tilts up for control surfaces during takeoff and landing. We explain how our museum’s restoration team carefully catalogs and plans the reassembly of these aircraft, gathering parts and coordinating projects to bring them back to their former glory.
It may not be the thing he's most famous for, but It may not be the thing he's most famous for, but on this day in aviation history, back in 1962, Neil Armstrong performed his so-called "cross country" X-15 flight. At 12 minutes, 28.7 seconds, it was the longest flight of the whole X-15 program, and for good reason.

The X-15 was not designed for long flights, but for extremely high speeds. It was an experimental rocket powered research aircraft that even crossed through the atmosphere into technical outer-space at several points.

Like most of its flights before, it was taken up into the air April 20th, 1962, by another aircraft entirely (can anyone name it?) and dropped over Mud Lake, Nevada. The point was to test a new control system that only required the pilot (in this case, Armstrong) to use one hand instead of two. Clearly, this didn't pose a problem for Armstrong. After running the engine for only 82.4 seconds, the X-15 accelerated to Mach 5.31 (3,789 miles per hour/6,098 kilometers per hour), continued on an upwards trajectory over the limit of the atmosphere even without the engine running, and then began its descent back down.

However, when Armstrong went to pull up from the descent a bit, the plane "ricocheted" off the top of atmosphere to a height where the aerodynamic control surfaces could no longer be expected to function. By the time he got back down into the atmosphere, he was far past his landing site, about 45 miles (72.4 kilometers) to the south in fact, and still needing to glide the plane back down about 45,000 feet. Even with the new control system, Armstrong managed to turn the plane around and glide the X-15 all the way back, landing only 12 miles south of the planned spot. It was an impressive piece of airmanship that spoke volumes of the skill and talent of a man who would one day be the first on the moon itself.
A UH-1 Huey slices through the humid skies of Viet A UH-1 Huey slices through the humid skies of Vietnam, its unmistakable “whomp-whomp” echo rolling across the jungle—the iconic sound you felt before you saw it—carrying soldiers into battle, pulling the wounded to safety, and marking every moment in between.

Remembering what it meant to be 20 years old in Vietnam, hearing that sound and knowing everything could change in an instant.

@yanksair Honoring those who served, preserving their stories, and keeping their legacy alive at Yanks Air Museum.
