📅 On This Day in Aviation History — June 27, ????

It's hard to believe the world's first successful aerial refueling happened as long ago as it did! Can anyone guess the year?

Over the skies of Rockwell Field in San Diego, two U.S. Army Air Service Airco DH-4B biplanes demonstrated that fuel could be transferred safely from one aircraft to another while in flight. Using a simple 50-foot hose lowered from the tanker aircraft, the receiving crew successfully took on fuel without landing—proving that aircraft endurance was no longer limited solely by the size of their fuel tanks.

Although the receiving aircraft was later forced to land because of mechanical trouble before any endurance records could be set, the experiment accomplished its true objective: demonstrating that in-flight refueling was both practical and repeatable. Just a few months later, the same technique enabled new world records for flight duration and distance.

Today, we do it all VERY differently, but we had to start somewhere. What began with two open-cockpit DH-4Bs and a manually handled hose has evolved into the sophisticated boom and probe-and-drogue systems that support air operations around the globe.

This weekend, we had an incredible service for an incredible man who made such a lasting impact on his family and community. If that last flight home showed him just a little peek at his own life, we know it had an even better view.

A deeply heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended the funeral for Charles Nichols this weekend.

The founder of our museum, and a loving father and grandfather to some still working hard here to carry on his legacy, he was a truly special and inspirational man that we can all be grateful for. Without him, none of this would exist, and his legacy lives on every day, not just in his progeny, but in the airplanes and history he worked so hard to cultivate for the public's education and enjoyment.

There were so very many people who came to honor and celebrate him, and they don't even come close to all the many lives he affected for the better.

For many of us, a love of aviation started with someone special—a father, grandfather, uncle, mentor, or family friend who looked up when an airplane flew overhead and inspired us to do the same.

Across generations, fathers have shared stories of wartime service, taught the fundamentals of flight, spent weekends at airshows or museums like ours, built model airplanes at the kitchen table, and passed along a passion for aviation history that continues today. Whether they served as pilots, mechanics, crew chiefs, engineers, or simply lifelong enthusiasts, their knowledge and enthusiasm helped preserve the legacy of flight for future generations.

The history we celebrate in our museum is more than a collection of aircraft. It is also the story of the people who flew them, maintained them, and shared their experiences with those who followed. Many of the aviation enthusiasts, veterans, volunteers, and supporters who make up our community can trace their interest in aviation back to lessons learned from their fathers and mentors.

Today, we honor all the dads who helped inspire a love of aviation, encouraged curiosity, and taught us to reach for the skies.

Happy Father's Day to all who have helped keep aviation history alive.
