It was on today’s date in 1947 that Grumman’s first jet-powered aircraft, the XF9F-2 Panther, took to the skies. With test pilot Corwin “Corky” Meyer at the controls, the prototype launched from Grumman’s Bethpage airfield in less-than-ideal weather. Meyer described the jet as handling like a “J-3 Cub,” despite its cutting-edge Rolls-Royce Nene engine.

Designed as a single-engine, carrier-based fighter for the U.S. Navy, the Panther excelled during the Korean War as a durable, versatile fighter known for its ability to survive battles.

Admission is $20 for adults and $5 for kids (11 and under). Tickets must be purchased online by December 2, 2024, as space is limited to 100 children. Yanks Members receive free admission but must RSVP online.

On today’s date in 1978, the first McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet took to the skies over St. Louis, Missouri. Chief Test Pilot Jack Krings flew the F/A-18A prototype on its 50-minute inaugural flight, reaching 24,000 feet before safely returning to Lambert Field. Developed for the U.S. Navy, the F/A-18 combined fighter and ground attack capabilities, a design decision that continues to influence the Hornet’s legacy. The aircraft remains in production as the Boeing F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet, extending its service into the next decade.

Do you know the history of our Douglas SBD-4 Dauntless?

Delivered in September 1942, this two-seat Scout Bomber saw extensive action, including deployments to NAS Roosevelt and NAS Norfolk, and carrier assignments on the USS Essex. Throughout 1943 and early 1944, it participated in critical battles across the Pacific, bombing Marcus Island, Rabaul, and Tarawa, and later striking targets in the Marshall and Mariana Islands.

The SBD-4’s unique design—like its multi-cellular wing and dive brakes with perforated flaps—allowed it to perform controlled high-angle dives, ideal for delivering its 1,000-lb bomb payload with precision. After its combat service, this particular aircraft even had a second life as a wind machine for MGM Studios before we acquired and restored it in 1984.
