The annual inspection is underway for our North Am

The annual inspection is underway for our North American SNJ-5 Texan. This year, we're installing a new radio and conducting a detailed inspection of key tailwheel components in line with National Warbird Operator Conference recommendations. As our most utilized training aircraft, the SNJ receives an upgrade each year to ensure it remains in top condition.

#OTD in 1946, the Republic Aviation XP-84 Thunderj

#OTD in 1946, the Republic Aviation XP-84 Thunderjet, serial number 45-59475, took its first flight at Muroc Army Airfield (now Edwards Air Force Base) in California.

Developed by Alexander Kartveli as a jet-powered successor to the P-47 Thunderbolt, the F-84 made history as the first jet fighter to fly across the Atlantic and the first to be equipped for air-to-air refueling. It was also the first USAF jet to carry tactical nuclear weapons. Entering service in 1947, the F-84 initially served as an escort for B-29 bombers during the Korean War, replacing the P-51 and F-80. As the F-86 Sabre came into service, the Thunderjet transitioned to a bomber role, proving highly effective in ground strikes against key military targets.

The BQM-34A Firebee, developed by Ryan Aeronautica

The BQM-34A Firebee, developed by Ryan Aeronautical Co. in San Diego, CA, made its first flight in 1958. This versatile UAV was designed as a tactical threat simulator, assisting in defense readiness training and weapons system evaluation. Known for its low-cost, adaptable design, the Firebee could perform high-speed 7g turns and sea-skimming flight as low as 10 feet above the ocean. With a service ceiling of 60,000 feet and a top speed of 710 mph, it became the premier high-performance aerial target for the USN and USAF for over five decades and remains in service today, launched from platforms like the C-130 Hercules or via ground-based Rocket Assisted Take Off (RATO). The US Army refers to it as the Model 124 or Q2C.

Have you seen our Stearman YPT-9B Cloudboy recently?

Constructed of welded Chrome-Moly steel tubing in truss form. Solid Spruce spars and Dural metal edges were all covered in fabric. Four prototypes of the YPT-9B were produced for the Army between 1930 and 1931. As with most trainers, the practicality of use, ease of maintenance, and the ability to take abuse from the beginner pilot came before beauty.

This YPT-9B was used in the Boeing School of Aeronautics aerobatic training. It later found a home as a seed sprayer and crop duster until we procured it in 1987, becoming the third aircraft in the collection.

This is our Eastern General Motors FM-2 Wildcat. Early Wildcats were the first folding-wing carrier-based fighters. The Japanese Zero had superior climb rates, range, speed, turning radius, and slower stall speeds but had no armor plate or self-sealing tanks, this made the Zero light and fast, but vulnerable. Outmaneuvered by the Zero, the Wildcat’s best strategy was to “dive in, shoot fast and get out.” Wildcats have unlimited dive, with no red line as experienced by noted test pilot Dick Foote.

The Wildcat played a vital role in the famous Battle of Midway in June of 1942, which we now know was a turning point in the war in the Pacific. The FM-2 also provided protection for convoys in the Atlantic and ensured their safety from the German U-boats.

This Wildcat was delivered on June 22nd, 1945, and served at NAS Tillamook in Oregon. It was stricken on February 28, 1946, and we procured it in 1983.

On this day in 1979, Neil Armstrong—moonwalker, test pilot, and aerospace engineer—set five aviation records in the prototype Learjet 28. With co-pilot Peter Reynolds and an NAA observer aboard, Armstrong climbed to 49,213 feet in just 12 minutes, later reaching a record altitude of 51,131 feet.

This is our Republic F-84E Thunderjet!

By 1945, Alexander Kartveli had developed a jet version of his highly successful P-47 Thunderbolt design. The prototype XP-84 first flew in 1946. The F-84 Thunderjet was not only the first jet fighter to fly across the Atlantic, but it was also the first jet fighter to feature air-to-air refueling. Additionally, it became the first USAF jet fighter capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons.

Entering service in 1947, the F-84 was deployed in Korea, where it replaced the P-51 and F-80 Shooting Star. Initially used as an escort for the B-29 bomber, the F-84 was later relegated to a bomber role with the arrival of the F-86. In this role, it proved highly effective in destroying dams, bridges, railroads, supply depots, and other ground targets.

In total, 7,889 F-84s were built, with nearly half of them serving with allied nations. The final variant, the F-84F, featured a significant redesign with a swept wing and entered service in 1954.

Our F-84E Thunderjet (serial 49-2155) was delivered on 21 February 1950. It served with the 27th FW (SAC) at Bergstrom AFB, TX, before moving to the 36th FBW USAFE at Furstenfeldbruck AB, West Germany, in September 1950. During its time there, it deployed to several bases in Europe and Libya. In August 1953, it transferred to the 59th Air Depot Wing USAFE at RAF Renfrew, UK, before relocating to various locations in the US, including Brookley AFB, AL, Luke AFB, AZ, and Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ. In 1956, it served with the 173rd FIS and 124th FIS ANG in Nebraska and Iowa. The aircraft was stricken in October 1958. We acquired it in 1999.

On this day in 1956, Lockheed test pilot Herman “Fish” Salmon took the YF-104A Starfighter on its maiden flight, marking a major step forward in supersonic fighter development. As the first of 17 pre-production models, the YF-104A featured a longer fuselage and revised air intakes compared to the XF-104 prototype. Just weeks later, on 28 February 1956, it became the first aircraft to achieve Mach 2 in level flight.
