This is our HUM-1 (MC-4A). The McCulloch Aircraft

This is our HUM-1 (MC-4A). The McCulloch Aircraft HUM-1 was the first tandem-rotor helicopter certified for commercial use in the U.S. Built with a steel tube fuselage and lightweight aluminum skin, it featured a centrally mounted engine. Its tandem-rotor system provided superior longitudinal stability and a wider center of gravity range, advantages still seen in modern cargo helicopters.

McCulloch Aircraft developed the MC-4 and J-2 Autogyro after acquiring Helicopter Engineering Research Corp in 1951. The company also produced military variants of the MC-4, including the XHUM-1 (MC-4A) for the U.S. Navy and the YH-30 (MC-4C) for the U.S. Army, though neither entered full production.

Originally established in California, McCulloch Aircraft rebranded as McCulloch Motors in 1946 and became a leader in the chainsaw market. The company also produced small two-stroke engines used in aviation, including military target drones for Radioplane. Founder Robert P. McCulloch later gained fame for purchasing and relocating London Bridge to Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

Delivered on June 15, 1953, our HUM-1 BuNo 133818 was assigned to Pool Bar M & S in El Segundo, CA, and later transferred to NAS Patuxent River, MD, for R&D testing. It was stricken from service on August 25, 1955. One of only two HUM-1s built, we started the restoring this aircraft in 2007.

This is our Waco Aircraft UEC. The Weaver Aircraft

This is our Waco Aircraft UEC. The Weaver Aircraft Company (WACO) was founded in 1921 in Lorain, Ohio, before relocating to Troy, Ohio, in 1924. From 1928 to 1935, WACO was the leading civilian aircraft manufacturer in the United States. The company later contributed to the war effort by producing large troop-carrying gliders used in all major invasions of World War II. One of WACO’s most successful aircraft was the Model 10, with over 1,100 units built by 1930.

The UEC was the first WACO—and the only biplane in our collection—to feature tension-compression struts in place of traditional crossed steel flying wires. It incorporated several innovations, including a speed-ring cowling and streamlined wheel pants to enhance aerodynamics. A center-hinged bar enabled a swing-over steering wheel, allowing for dual control.

Renowned for its versatility, the UEC quickly found roles in various fields. As an improved version of the 1931 QDC WACO, it served as an air ambulance, seaplane, air-service aircraft, government aircraft, and even a family-friendly sport plane. Certified under ATC #467, the UEC was designed to go anywhere, offering reliability and efficiency for both pilots and passengers.

We acquired this beautiful aircraft in 2002.

Flying her Beechcraft D17W Staggerwing over Southern California, she climbed to an astonishing 30,052 feet in just under two and a half hours. The achievement, later certified by the National Aeronautic Association, broke the previous record held by Ruth Rowland Nichols.
