📅 On This Day in Aviation History — July 28–29, 19 📅 On This Day in Aviation History — July 28–29, 1929

Long before today's endurance records were measured in jet fuel and sophisticated avionics, French aviator Maryse Bastié proved that determination and skill could keep an aircraft aloft for more than a full day.

On July 28–29, 1929, Bastié flew her Caudron C.109 continuously for 26 hours, 47 minutes, 30 seconds, becoming the first woman to set an official Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) world aviation record.

Flying a lightweight parasol-wing monoplane powered by a modest 45-horsepower radial engine, Bastié demonstrated remarkable endurance, precision, and mechanical reliability. Her achievement launched a record-setting career that ultimately included eight FAI world records for distance and duration, helping establish her as one of the most accomplished aviators of the interwar years.

At a time when opportunities for women in aviation were still limited, Bastié's success showed that the cockpit belonged to anyone with the talent and determination to master it. The second woman in France to earn a pilot's license, and the first to earn a public transport license, her records inspired a generation of aviators and secured her place among the pioneers who helped expand the boundaries of flight.

🦈✈️ Happy Shark Week! If any aircraft deserves to 🦈✈️ Happy Shark Week!

If any aircraft deserves to celebrate, it's our Grumman F-11 Tiger.

Despite the name, this Navy fighter often wore aggressive shark mouth nose art that perfectly matched its performance. Introduced in the 1950s, the Tiger became one of the Navy's first supersonic fighters and the first to exceed Mach 1 in level flight. Its sleek design and exceptional handling also made it the mount of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels for more than a decade.

Though it served on the front lines for only a few years, the F-11 left a lasting mark on naval aviation and remains one of Grumman's most elegant jet designs.

We'd say it's the perfect aircraft to kick off Shark Week. 🦈 Which aircraft with shark art is your favorite?

Today we celebrate Amelia Earhart Day, honoring on Today we celebrate Amelia Earhart Day, honoring one of the most influential aviators in history and a pioneer whose accomplishments continue to inspire generations of pilots and aviation enthusiasts.

Although many remember Earhart for her mysterious disappearance in 1937, her greatest legacy lies in what she achieved during her lifetime. In 1932, she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, a feat that earned her the Distinguished Flying Cross and cemented her place among aviation's greatest trailblazers. She also set numerous speed and distance records, completed the first solo flight from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland, and continually pushed the boundaries of what aircraft—and the people who flew them—could accomplish.

Beyond her record-setting flights, Earhart was one of aviation's most passionate advocates. She encouraged young people to pursue careers in flight and championed opportunities for women in aviation, helping found and lead The Ninety-Nines, an international organization for licensed women pilots. She believed that advancing aviation required courage, curiosity, and a willingness to venture into the unknown.

At Yanks Air Museum, we celebrate Amelia Earhart not only as a record-setting pilot, but as one of the visionaries who helped shape the future of aviation and inspired countless others to look toward the horizon and ask, "What's next?"

✈️ Aviation Trivia: Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic in 1932—but can you name the aircraft she flew on that historic journey?
