✈️ The End of an Era—and the Beginning of a Revolution

Today, the U.S. Marine Corps will retire the last operational Harrier, closing more than four decades of service for one of the most unique combat aircraft ever fielded. From amphibious assault ships to austere forward operating bases, the Harrier's ability to take off in short distances and land vertically gave Marine aviators a capability unlike any other fixed-wing aircraft.

At Yanks Air Museum, our Harrier represents the first generation of that legendary "Jump Jet" family, originally coming from the RAF, the first ever service to use the Harrier. Developed during the 1960s, the Harrier became the world's first truly successful operational V/STOL (Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing) combat aircraft, proving that a jet fighter could operate from locations far beyond traditional runways.

The U.S. Marine Corps embraced the concept early as well, becoming the first American service to operate the Harrier. Beginning in the 1970s, Harrier squadrons demonstrated how expeditionary air power could be brought closer to the battlefield, a philosophy that would define Marine aviation for generations.

As one Harrier makes a final flight for all of them today, we're reminded that the aircraft's legacy extends far beyond its combat record. The Harrier changed how military planners thought about air power, and its influence can still be seen today in aircraft like the F-35B Lightning II.

The Fighter Jet That Dominated MiG Alley.

This is the legendary North American F-86 Sabre — one of the most iconic fighter jets in aviation history.
During the Korean War, the F-86 Sabre became a symbol of American air power in the skies over “MiG Alley,” where U.S. pilots regularly faced larger numbers of enemy Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 fighters.

Even while outnumbered, Sabre pilots gained the advantage through superior training, tactics, and the aircraft’s remarkable performance—especially at high speed and in dogfights. Many aviation historians credit the Sabre with helping secure air superiority over Korea, which played a major role in shaping the outcome of the war.

For aviation enthusiasts, the F-86 isn’t just a fighter jet—it represents the beginning of the jet age and one of the greatest air-to-air combat rivalries in history.

Most importantly, we honor the men who flew and maintained these aircraft—and all Korean War veterans—for their courage and sacrifice. Thank you for your service. 🇺🇸

📅 On This Day in Aviation — May 27, 1919

On this day in 1919, the U.S. Navy Curtiss NC-4 made history by becoming the first aircraft to successfully complete a transatlantic flight.

After departing Newfoundland earlier that month and battling weather delays, engine issues, fog, and rough Atlantic conditions along the route, NC-4 finally arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, touching down on the Tagus Estuary at 8:01 p.m. local time. The achievement marked a turning point in aviation history, proving that long-distance oceanic flight was possible years before Lindbergh’s solo crossing.

Commanded by Lieutenant Commander Albert Cushing Read, the crew included Navy, Coast Guard, and engineering personnel who guided the massive flying boat across the Atlantic in stages through Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Azores. Of the three Navy Curtiss flying boats attempting the crossing, only NC-4 completed the journey. Her sister ships, NC-1 and NC-3, were forced down by severe weather before reaching Europe.

The NC flying boats were enormous aircraft for their era. Powered by four Liberty L-12 V-12 engines producing more than 400 horsepower each, the NC-4 featured a 126-foot upper wingspan and a wooden boat hull designed for open-water operations. With a cruising speed of roughly 85 mph and a range approaching 1,500 miles, the aircraft represented the cutting edge of naval aviation technology in the years immediately following World War I.

What makes the accomplishment especially remarkable is the era in which it occurred. The crew navigated largely by dead reckoning, celestial navigation, and support from a network of ships stationed across the Atlantic to help guide the route. Completing the crossing required not only engineering innovation, but also extraordinary crew coordination and endurance.

Today, NC-4 remains one of the most historically significant aircraft of the early aviation era — a pioneering flying boat that helped demonstrate the future potential of long-range international air travel.

The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter earned its name for a reason. Designed in the 1950s as a supersonic interceptor, it became famous for its sleek fuselage, incredible speed, and unbelievably small wings. Built to climb fast and fly faster, the F-104 could push past Mach 2, making it one of the most iconic aircraft of the jet age.

And those wings? Razor thin. So sharp that ground crews often had to cover the leading edges with protective guards while servicing the aircraft to avoid injury. It’s one of those details you don’t forget once you see it up close.

This Starfighter still carries that unmistakable presence decades later—and we’re excited to restore it back to a beautiful display piece here @yanksair Not to fly again, but to preserve a piece of aviation history for future generations to experience up close.
