This is our Curtiss P-40E-1 Warhawk. We've painted

This is our Curtiss P-40E-1 Warhawk. We've painted it with the iconic shark mouth, which was popularized by the 1941 American Volunteer Group (AVG), also known as the "Flying Tigers." Operating from China under Claire Chennault, the group of 215 pilots achieved an impressive record of 286 kills with only four losses. After the U.S. entered the war, the AVG became part of the U.S. Army Air Forces' 23rd Fighter Group.

By 1941, nearly 14,000 P-40s had been delivered, making it the first mass-produced U.S. fighter with a unit cost of $57,000. The P-40 was America’s primary fighter during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Though it had altitude limitations, it was beloved by its pilots and ground crews.

After World War II, this particular P-40 was repurposed as a commercial cloud seeder before we acquired it in 1975 as the second aircraft in our collection.

On today's date in 1959, Northrop test pilot Lewis A. Nelson made the first takeoff of the YT-38-5-NO Talon prototype at Edwards Air Force Base. Designed by Edgar Schmued, famous for his work on iconic aircraft like the P-51 Mustang, the Talon became the world’s first supersonic flight trainer. With its sleek design and powerful twin-engine performance, the T-38A set new standards in aviation, becoming a crucial tool for pilot training worldwide. It is still in service today.

Named after its de Havilland Gipsy engine, the Gip

Named after its de Havilland Gipsy engine, the Gipsy Moth was a widely popular British design, also produced in the U.S. by Moth Aircraft Corp. Its success played a significant role in expanding private and sport aviation between the World Wars.

The DH-60 GM was built using a combination of wood, fabric, and welded chrome-moly steel. Its wings could be folded for compact storage, small enough to fit in a single-car garage. The American version, powered by the Wright-Gipsy engine from Wright Aero Corp., first flew in 1929. From the beginning, the Moth set records in altitude, speed, distance, and aerobatics. In 1930, pilot Laura Ingalls performed 344 continuous loops in a Gipsy Moth, setting a new record.

Flight schools famously advertised “Solo by Sundown,” and with over 10 million miles flown, the Moth earned a reputation as a stable, safe, and reliable aircraft. Its wing slots made it resistant to stalls and spins, and a 200-foot crash test conducted by Captain Geoffrey de Havilland resulted in minimal damage and no pilot injury—something unheard of in other aircraft of its era.

This particular Gipsy Moth was once owned by Paramount Studios, appearing on the silver screen long before we acquired it in 2005.

On today's date in 1939, the Bell XP-39 Airacobra prototype took flight for the first time at Wright Field, Ohio, with test pilot James Taylor at the controls. The XP-39 was later produced as the P-39 and became one of the most widely used American fighter aircraft of World War II, serving in ground-attack and air-combat roles, particularly with the Soviet Air Force under Lend-Lease.
