12 Seconds That Changed Everything. 1903.

Orville and Wilbur Wright were not scientists or engineers by training. They ran a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio, and spent around $1000 of their own money (no government funding, no university backing) - on four years of glider experiments, wind tunnel tests, and controlled crashes. What they were solving wasn’t just the problem of getting airborne. It was the problem of control - how to steer a machine in 3 dimensions simultaneously. Nobody had cracked it. They did.

On December 17th, 1903, the Wright Flyer made four flights at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. The first lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet - shorter than the wingspan of a modern Boeing 747. The last flight covered 852 feet in 59 seconds. Then a gust of wind destroyed the aircraft. That afternoon Orville walked four miles to send their father a telegram. The press barely noticed - just days earlier, a $70 000 government-funded flying machine had crashed into the Potomac River, and most journalists assumed the Wright brothers were telling the same kind of story.

The world paid attention in 1908, when Wilbur demonstrated the aircraft in France. European aviation pioneers who had been working for years came to watch and wept openly. What followed the triumph was grimmer. The brothers spent the next decade in courtrooms, suing competitors who built aircraft using three-axis control. Historians argue their patent wars set American aviation back by years. When the US entered World War I in 1917, not a single American aircraft was considered fit for military service. Wilbur died exhausted in 1912 - typhoid fever contracted after a banquet in Boston, worn down by years of litigation. Orville lived until January 1948, long enough to see jets and understand what those 12 seconds had started.

Neil Armstrong later carried a piece of the Wright Flyer’s fabric to the Moon. The first flight covered 120 feet. The Moon is 239,000 miles away. Sometimes that gap says everything.

The Bell P-39 Airacobra was heavily criticized by U.S. pilots — poor high-altitude performance, tricky handling, and not suited for their style of aerial combat. Many in the U.S. considered it underwhelming at best.

But through the Bell P-39 Airacobra supplied under the Lend-Lease Program, everything changed on the Eastern Front.

Soviet pilots didn’t fight high-altitude dogfights — they fought low, fast, and violent. And in that environment, the P-39 thrived. Its rugged frame, tight low-altitude maneuverability, and deadly 37mm cannon made it a feared tank-buster and dogfight weapon.

Rejected by the US… embraced by the Soviets.

North American designed and built the original XP-51 in just 117 days, creating what would become one of the most effective fighters of World War II. As a long-range bomber escort and formidable dogfighter, the Mustang helped secure air superiority over Europe and the Pacific, and 281 Allied pilots became aces in the type, second only to the F6F Hellcat.

This specific aircraft is a P-51D-30, one of the late-block Mustangs that refined the D-model formula. Compared to earlier D variants like the -5, -10, or -20, the D-30 featured a factory-installed dorsal fin fillet for better directional stability (previously a retrofit), the advanced K-14 gyroscopic gunsight as standard for superior deflection shooting, and structural upgrades like metal elevators plus standardized bomb/rocket hardpoints. These changes made it a more stable gunnery platform with improved handling when fully fueled—perfect for long-range escort and ground attack.

Most P-51s were built in Inglewood, California, and test flown over Mines Field, now LAX. The D-model introduced the distinctive bubble canopy for improved visibility, six .50 caliber Browning machine guns, and the Packard-built Merlin engine that dramatically enhanced high-altitude performance. Innovations such as the G-suit and the K-14 gyroscopic gunsight further increased the Mustang's combat effectiveness, making it one of the most advanced piston fighters of the war.

Our aircraft, serial number 44-74910, was delivered July 10, 1945, and initially assigned to the 2116th AAF Base Unit at Napier AAF, Alabama. It later served with multiple Air Training Command units before transferring to Air National Guard squadrons in California, New Mexico, Washington, Minnesota, and Ohio. It served with the Air Defense Command during the early Cold War. It was dropped from the inventory by commercial sale in July 1959. In civilian life, it became a well-known air racer, winning multiple Bendix Air Race victories, before joining our collection in 1987.

#ThrowbackThursday all the way to 1951!

On this day in Aviation History, Jackie Cochran set both a national record and a world record by flying her P-51C Mustang at an average speed of 464.374 miles per hour (747.338 kilometers per hour) over a straight 16 kilometer (9.942 miles) course in Indio, California. You can see in the certificate below that she earned recognition from both the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale and the National Aeronautic Association of the U.S.

Soon after, her series of record-breaking would also help Colonel Cochran of the USAF Reserve earn her first of three eventual Distinguished Flying Crosses. Later, in 1953 (but not quite on THIS day in history), she would also become the first woman to break the sound barrier.

That's right, Cochran was a pretty unique and spectacular individual, as was the plane involved in her 1951 record! Made up of parts from other P-51s, the nicknamed Thunderbird didn't technically have a USAAC serial number, and was given a serial number by the Civil Aviation Administration after they designated it a P-51C.

On May 6, 1968, Neil Armstrong narrowly escaped death by ejecting from the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (LLRV-1) at Ellington Air Force Base, Texas. The trainer went out of control,, prompting Armstrong to eject at an altitude of approximately 200 feet. He landed safely by parachute while the LLRV-1 crashed and was destroyed by fire.

On this day in aviation history, USAF Colonel Edward H. Taylor set a Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) world speed record at Edwards Air Force Base, averaging around 700 mph across a 1,000 km course in the RF-101C Voodoo. Just over a week later, another Voodoo pilot would push the platform even further, highlighting just how capable this aircraft—and its crews—had become in the early supersonic era.

Taylor was far more than a record-setting pilot. A veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, he logged over 5,000 flight hours across multiple generations of aircraft, from the P-38 Lightning to high-speed reconnaissance jets over North Vietnam. His career reflects the evolution of U.S. airpower—and the demands placed on the pilots flying at its edge.

The aircraft behind the record, the RF-101C Voodoo, was an unarmed reconnaissance variant built for speed and survivability. Powered by twin Pratt & Whitney J57 afterburning turbojets, it was one of the first operational aircraft capable of exceeding 1,000 mph. With a top speed just over Mach 1.5 and a service ceiling above 55,000 feet, it could rapidly penetrate contested airspace while carrying a six-camera suite for multi-angle intelligence collection.

More than just a record-holder, the RF-101C proved itself in combat—particularly over Vietnam—where speed and altitude were its primary defenses.

A milestone flight, but also a snapshot of an era where performance and mission capability were inseparable.
