This is our Bell UH-1H Iroquois, more commonly known as the “Huey.” This versatile helicopter was originally built in 1963 as a UH-1D by Bell Helicopter in Fort Worth, Texas, and became a key part of military operations, especially in medevac missions during the Vietnam War. The Huey is famous for its “thump” sound and was known for its bravery in combat, often disregarding enemy fire to save lives. With its role in the Vietnam War and later in civilian service, the Huey became one of the most recognizable helicopters in history.

Our Huey has an interesting history. It was converted from a UH-1D to a UH-1H in 1972 and later served with the United States Forest Service. It was used for various missions, including firefighting and search-and-rescue, until it was retired from service.

#OTD in 1967, McDonnell Aircraft delivered its 2,000th F-4 Phantom II, an F-4D assigned to the U.S. Air Force. The aircraft was soon deployed to Thailand, where it saw combat during Operation Rolling Thunder.

The P-39 was unique among WWII fighters with its mid-engine configuration and tricycle landing gear, allowing for a 37mm cannon to be mounted in the nose without the need for propeller synchronization. Its car-style doors were another unusual feature, designed to be jettisoned since they couldn’t be opened against the airstream.

At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, the P-39 and P-40 were the only first-line fighters available to the Army Air Forces. The P-39 proved highly effective in ground attack roles across multiple theaters, exploiting the vulnerability of tanks to strikes from above.

A total of 9,558 P-39s were built, with more than half sent to Russia through the Lend-Lease program.

This P-39 was recovered from an abandoned landing strip in Tadji, New Guinea. The nine-year restoration of this aircraft was completed in March 2002. Less than three flight-worthy P-39s are known to exist today.

On today's date in 1967, Captain Max C. Brestel, flying a Republic F-105D Thunderchief, became the first U.S. pilot of the Vietnam War to shoot down two enemy aircraft in a single mission. During a strike on the heavily defended Thai Nguyen Steel Mill, Brestel engaged and destroyed two MiG-17s.

Perhaps no other place at no other time in history

Perhaps no other place at no other time in history saw such a collection of aviation innovators as Wichita, Kansas in 1925 when Walter Beech, Clyde Cessna, and Lloyd Stearman formed the Travel Air Manufacturing Company. Though they would all eventually go their separate ways, their combined efforts brought to life several classic aircraft designs including this Travel Air 6000-A.

Designed to fulfill the demand for an airline and private luxury aircraft, the 6000-A included seating for six passengers, soundproofing, and an insulated cabin. Its nimble performance despite its size made it not only a successful business aircraft but also popular with private pilots who could afford the standard $12,000 to $18,000 price.

Powered by the famed and reliable P&W R-985 Wasp Junior, the 6000-A could be found performing a number of roles throughout its distinguished career. While some flew with Central Air Lines and Overland Airways, others found use with the Phillips Petroleum Co. Still others found their way into the film world. One was even owned by noted movie actor Wallace Beery who paid $20,000 for his custom-built 6000-A.

We acquired this aircraft in 2015 in a multi-way trade between Yanks, the California Science Center of Los Angeles, and John Seibold’s Grand Canyon Valle Scenic Tours.

The SB2C's wings are complete and ready to hang! Before we can continue the rest of the restoration we need to finish up the YKS-7 interior so it can go on display to make room in the shop for the rest of the Helldiver.

#OTD in 1954 the XF-104 made its first flight at E

#OTD in 1954 the XF-104 made its first flight at Edwards Air Force Base. Part of the ‘Century Series’ of aircraft, the F-104 was born out of Lockheed engineer Clarence “Kelly” Johnson’s desire to design a new aircraft based on personal discussions he had with fighter pilots engaging Soviet-built MiG aircraft in Korea. Built with a lightweight frame and powerful engine, F-104s set a number of speed and altitude records including Jacqueline Cochran’s setting of the women’s world speed record. The F-104 served in several NATO member air forces though its reputation suffered somewhat during the Lockheed Bribery Scandal.

As the MiG threat over Vietnam continued to grow, so did the need for escorts for radar-equipped EC-121 Warning Stars and other aircraft. F-104s commonly served as escorts for these vital missions as well as serving in the close air support role.

As the world entered the “Space Age”, three F-104s were modified to serve as training vehicles for astronauts. Designated NF-104As, these aircraft were equipped with a supplementary rocket engine, allowing them to set a new altitude record of more than 120,000 feet. These were also equipped with a Reaction Control System (RCS) for maneuvering in the extremely thin air at high altitudes.

Here at Yanks we have an F-104A and an F-104C.

We're currently hard at work restoring our P-51A. This wing retains its original bare aluminum skin, as was standard during wartime when longevity in combat wasn’t the priority. While modern restorations typically use new skin with clear anodizing, we opted for a Cerakote silver finish since we're keeping it as original as possible.

We're also keeping the stringers historical by painting most of them yellow, with one green. This was a known factory anomaly from North American Aviation’s production line.

Once the correct stenciling and stamping are complete, the wing will be finished!
