Upper Turret

Service History

  • MFG: Martin 250CE
  • Armament: (2) .50 caliber Machine Guns
  • Application: B-24, B-26, A-20 and P2V

All metal and Plexiglas construction, this electrically operated dorsal turret had a 400 round per gun capacity. All turrets consist of an enclosure, control system, mount, sight, feed and firing mechanism. Able to rotate 360 degrees, the turret had a mechanism that would not allow the guns to fire through the propeller arc or tail, although antennae were often victims. The upper turret was operated by the flight engineer, a key man in an emergency, who was familiar with the engines, airframe, oxygen, guns, radio, bomb racks and flight.
