More Cessna 172’s have been built than any aircraft in history, making 172A Skyhawk the most popular aircraft in the world. The 172’s have simple construction, are easy to fly, easy on the wallet, and continue to be popular aircraft today.
The 172 holds the 1958 Flight Endurance World Record. The aircraft took-off on Dec 4, 1958 and did not land again until Feb 4, 1959, a total of 64 days, 22 hours, 19 min and 5 seconds in the air. This record still stands today.
To save time and cost the aircraft was originally certified as a tricycle modification of the Cessna 170 Type Certificate. Sales soared to 1,400 aircraft in the first full year of production and the 170C was renamed 172A and earned its own Type Certificate. The airframe remained the same from the 1960’s through the 1980’s when production finally ended. In 1996 production began again with the creation of the new 172R.
In 2009 Tiffany Wright, the granddaughter of Yanks founder, flew this to Yanks from Texas. This 1960 Skyhawk was given to her as a gift from her grandfather to encourage her to earn a private pilots license, which she completed in 2011.
