The Noorduyn Norseman is one of those rare aircraf

The Noorduyn Norseman is one of those rare aircraft that truly earned the label “bush plane.” Designed in the early 1930s by Robert B.C. Noorduyn specifically for Canadian northern operations, it first flew on 14 November 1935 and was built around practicality: a high-wing layout for dockside loading, a rugged steel-tube fuselage, and interchangeable landing gear—floats, skis, or wheels—to operate from virtually any surface.

Originally a civil utility aircraft, the Norseman quickly proved itself as a reliable workhorse in remote regions. Production might have remained modest, but WWII changed everything. The USAAF adopted it as the C/UC-64, ultimately ordering hundreds for use in harsh environments from Alaska to Europe, while the RCAF and other Allied forces also relied on it for transport and training roles.

Over its long production run (1935–1959), more than 900 examples were built, most during WWII, and the aircraft served in dozens of countries—remarkably even operating in both Arctic and Antarctic conditions. Postwar, it continued in civilian bush operations, cementing its reputation as a durable, adaptable aircraft that could go almost anywhere.

Now, nearly 90 years after its first flight, this legacy continues. After an extensive restoration, our Norseman returned to the skies just three days ago—a fitting tribute to an aircraft designed to endure.

After serving in the RCAF during WWII, performing search and rescue missions for them afterwards, and eventually flying for Georgian Bay Airways of Parry Sound, Ontario, this specific aircraft had a particularly hard water landing in 1966 on the surface of Antiguois Lake in Quebec. Eventually, she made her way here to us, flying for the first time again on Tuesday, April 28th, 2026. Even today, the Norseman stands as a testament to utility, maintainability, and sheer toughness.

On this day in Aviation History, in 1963, Betty Jean Miller set off on a trip that would make her the first woman to complete a Trans-Pacific flight, as well as the first person of any gender to complete such a flight without a navigator.

Though newspapers at the time referred to her as "the flying housewife," the 37-year-old pilot actually ended up logging over 6,500 hours of flight time in her 14 years as a pilot, working as a flight instructor and commercial pilot rated in single- and multi-engine airplanes and helicopters.

For this flight specifically, Miller needed to deliver a a twin-engine Piper PA-23-160 Apache H, N4315Y (s/n 23-2039) from the U.S. to its new owner in Australia. Built in December 1961 at Piper’s Vero Beach facility, it was a four-seat, light twin with retractable tricycle gear, measuring 27 ft 2 in in length with a 37-ft wingspan and standing just over 10 ft tall. With an empty weight of 2,230 lbs and a max gross of 3,800 lbs, it offered a solid balance of payload and performance for its class.

Power came from a pair of Lycoming O-320-B2B engines—each a 160 hp, normally aspirated, horizontally opposed four-cylinder—driving two-blade Hartzell constant-speed props. This setup delivered a cruise speed around 150 knots, with a top speed near 159 knots and a service ceiling of approximately 17,000 feet.

Still, her flight took nearly 2 weeks due to various delays. Sometimes she needed to wait for good weather, repairs, or simply get some rest. After her first leg to Hawaii, she had to wait 4 days just to get a radio repaired, and what should have been her last leg of the trip turned into merely her fourth after severe weather forced her to divert to Noumea, New Caledonia. Built to be pilot-friendly, it turned everyday young men into combat-ready aviators in under a year—and then sent them into battle with one of the most lethal advantages of WWII.

Its record says everything: a staggering 19:1 kill ratio in the Pacific. And legends like David McCampbell, the Navy’s all-time leading ace with 34 victories, made history in this very aircraft.

Now, we’re bringing that history back to life. This Hellcat is currently being restored to fly again—joining the rare few still airworthy in the world.

✈️ Built in 1941, the N3N‑3, commonly known as the Canary or Yellow Peril, was uniquely designed and built entirely by the US Government at the Naval Aircraft Factory in Pennsylvania as a primary trainer for US Navy cadets.

Of all‑metal construction and designed to operate on both wheels and floats, the N3N was used to train naval aviators, flying boat pilots and also served in specialist roles including glider towing. The type has the distinction of being the last biplane operated by the US armed forces, remaining in service until 1961.
