Just last week was the birthday of a very special Just last week was the birthday of a very special employee over here in our shop who has been so instrumental to the museum's success that we just have to give him a #SpotlightSaturday shoutout!

Keiichi "Tony" Furukawa was born July 12th, 1953, in Japan, where his obsession with aviation first began during a high school project building a human-powered aircraft under the tutelage of instructor Kenichi Maeda. In 1977, he migrated to the United States at 24 years old, arriving in Kansas with only a small amount of cash and a briefcase full of pictures of his work in aviation. There, he met the Stolp family at an aviation convention and moved on to California to manufacture parts for their aircraft kits.

He soon became immersed in the aviation restoration field, most notably bringing a Fokker D7 back to flying condition after a complete ground-up restoration, and even restoring a Nieuport 28 with the original Gnome rotary engine. In 1989, he met our founder, Charles Nichols, and began a working relationship that would last over 30 years. Tony would complete dozens of aircraft for the Yanks collection, including the Ryan B-1 Brougham, the Waco CG4A Hadrian Glider, and, most recently, the airworthy UC-64A Norduyn Norseman.

You may know him for all those many impressive projects, but here at Yanks, he's treasured for even more. Having just turned 73, Tony has taken his rightful place as the wise grandfather of the shop, keeping the young bucks in check. Dave and Casey know better than to challenge Tony's expertise, or they will feel his wrath. His lightning speed karate chop would knock Casey to the floor or his horse kick could throw Dave through a wall! All this to be accomplished while holding his lunch in one hand… and never leaving his comfy chair of course.

That man can do nearly anything at his table and chair, no fancy equipment or shop required.

At the end of the day, his favorite quote is "Keep Going," and what keeps him going better than his beloved daughter, Mona? He's a man of few words, but we highly recommend hearing more about his incredible life, if you ever get the chance to say hi.
We hope you have some fun plans for this weekend, We hope you have some fun plans for this weekend, but please note that you'll be booked next weekend!

One week from now, we'll be having SPACE DAY on July 24th AND July 25th. 🚀

Both days, we'll have special guests:
☄️ Frank Dowens will be presenting on Friday at 10:30am with an array of space artifacts for kids (and adults) to explore... even a Mars Rover folks can interact with!
🌙 Lovell Stoddard, a Boeing engineer, will share insights into the Apollo program and the engineering that made the Moon missions possible during his presentation on Saturday at 10:30am

📅 #ThrowbackThursday to 1957! On this day in Avia 📅 #ThrowbackThursday to 1957!

On this day in Aviation History: Marine Corps Major John Glenn—years before becoming the first American to orbit the Earth—was already making history by completing the first supersonic transcontinental flight across the United States.

Flying a Vought F8U-1P Crusader as part of Project Bullet, Glenn departed NAS Los Alamitos, California, and landed at Floyd Bennett Field in New York just 3 hours, 23 minutes later. Averaging more than 725 mph, the flight demonstrated not only the Crusader's remarkable performance but also the ability of modern jet fighters to sustain high-speed operations over long distances.

The aircraft itself was a photo-reconnaissance version of the famous "Last of the Gunfighters." Instead of carrying cannons or missiles, Glenn's Crusader was equipped with cameras to document the entire mission. Even with additional fuel capacity, the flight required several aerial refuelings, showcasing the growing importance of tanker support in extending the reach of high-performance military aircraft.

Does anyone know how times Glenn ended up refueling during this impressive (and relatively short) flight? #Trivia
The AH-1F represented the ultimate evolution of th The AH-1F represented the ultimate evolution of the single-engine Cobra family. Introduced in the 1980s, it featured a more powerful Lycoming T53 engine, upgraded avionics, a heads-up display, laser rangefinder, infrared countermeasures, and improved survivability systems. Combined with its narrow fuselage and tandem cockpit, these enhancements made the AH-1F one of the most capable attack helicopters of its era.

Armed with a chin-mounted M197 three-barrel 20mm cannon, TOW anti-tank missiles, Hydra 70 rockets, or combinations of all three, the Cobra was designed to engage both armored vehicles and ground targets while remaining fast and difficult to hit. Its slim profile—only about three feet wide at the cockpit—earned it a reputation as a difficult target while allowing excellent visibility for both pilot and gunner.

Although later succeeded by the twin-engine AH-1W Super Cobra and today's AH-1Z Viper in Marine Corps service, the AH-1F remained a mainstay of U.S. Army aviation for decades. More importantly, it established the attack helicopter doctrine that continues to shape rotary-wing combat operations around the world.
