Schirra (1923-2007) was one of the original seven American astronauts to go into space in Mercury, Gemini and Apollo spacecraft.

He flew 90 combat missions in Korea, mostly in an F-84 Thunderjet as an exchange pilot with the USAF and later became a test pilot, evaluating the F-4 Phantom for Naval use.

He piloted Sigma 7 on a six-orbit Mercury mission. He was commander pilot of Gemini 6. He was aboard the first Apollo manned flight after the fire that killed three fellow astronauts.
