RED OCTOBER IN THE ARCTIC – 2023 Lecture Series with PHILIP KLINTWORTH
November 18 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

2023 Lecture Series with Capt. Philip G. Klintworth, US Navy, Ret.
RED OCTOBER IN THE ARCTIC
SATURDAY / NOVEMBER 18, 2023 / STARTS AT 11AM
The history of the Cold War is often characterized by espionage operations, proxy wars, and political brinkmanship. But, beneath the ocean’s waves, another war was being fought by the US Navy Submarine Force, “the Silent Service”.
Capt. Phil G. Klintworth USN spent most of his twenty-nine-year naval career in this elite and exclusive community rising to command the USS Theodore Roosevelt and the USS Tautog. His deployments included five Polaris missile deterrent patrols and operations in the Arctic under the polar ice cap.
When it was decided to adapt noted author Tom Clancy’s seminal work, The Hunt for Red October (1984) to the big screen, Klintworth, then commanding the U.S. Naval Submarine Base at San Diego, was the obvious choice for technical consultant. His contributions to set design, accurate terminology, and crew training helped create what is now a classic film that captures all the danger, excitement, and realism of the Cold War.
Now, he’s ready to tell the real story. Ever wonder what a “caterpillar drive” really is? Can you really defeat a torpedo by turning into it?
Come and join us at Yanks Air Museum on November 18th at 11 a.m. and learn from an American hero who really did help write the book on “naval combat tactics”.
